Religious leaders in Ibanda District have urged Christians to embrace generosity and peace as core values of the Christmas message, warning that unity and restraint are especially important as Uganda approaches the general elections.
Speaking during Christmas Day Mass at Bubare Catholic Church, the parish priest, Fr. Eladius Tailo, encouraged believers to share with those in need, saying the birth of Jesus Christ reflects God’s generosity towards humanity.
“The birth of Jesus Christ shows us how generous God is to mankind,” Fr Tailo said. “As Christians, we must reflect this generosity by caring for and supporting one another, especially the less fortunate.”
At St. Paul’s Cathedral in Ibanda, the Bishop of North West Ankole Diocese, Rt Rev Amos Magazine, emphasized the importance of peace among Christians and within the wider community during the festive season.
“Christmas is a season of peace,” Bishop Magazine said. “As believers, we must live in harmony with one another and let peace guide our actions, not only today but always.”
The bishop also urged Christians to uphold peace during the forthcoming general elections, cautioning that violence and division undermine national progress and development.
“As we approach the general elections, peace should prevail,” he said. “We should choose leaders who promote unity and peaceful coexistence because peace is the foundation of development.”
The messages from the religious leaders come as political campaigns intensify across the country ahead of the polls.
They encouraged voters to make responsible choices by supporting leaders committed to peace, stability and national development.
They concluded by reminding Christians that generosity, compassion and peaceful living are the most meaningful ways to honour the message of Christmas beyond the celebrations.
